98 Degrees is ‘super excited about being back in Cincinnati’ for Christmas show

Brothers Nick Lachey and Drew Lachey, Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons — known as 98 Degrees — will bring the “98 Degrees at Christmas 2018” to Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center on Saturday, Nov. 24. at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert start at $39.50 and can be purchased at www.cincinnatiarts.org.

As part of a 36-city tour that kicked off Nov. 1 in Winnipeg, the ’90s pop sensation will bring a mix of Christmas tunes from their holiday-themed albums, combined with some of the group’s best-loved hits such as “Because of You,” “I Do (Cherish You),” and “The Hardest Thing.” We had a recent conversation with Timmons, who filled us in on the tour and shared more about what fans can expect from the evening.

Q: Tell us about the tour and how it’s going so far?

A: So far, so good. We had a great response last year. This year, the first several shows were sold out, and it’s been great as far as the turnout. People are getting acclimated, understanding what this show is all about. Fans are excited to see us and we’re excited to be out there.

Q: How do you feel like this year’s Christmas tour compares to the holiday concert last year?

A: The tone of the show is the same. It’s family-friendly. We cover Christmas songs from both albums, last year’s Let It Snow, and then the 1999 release, 98 Degrees, This Christmas. We’ve added some other songs, and we add some humor as well.

Q: “Season Of Love” is a new, original song from Let It Snow. The song has a lot of your signature harmonies. Can you tell us about the song?

A: “Season Of Love” is a great song, and we’re really proud of it. We wrote it with the guys that have produced the majority of our Christmas albums. We wanted to do something new and fresh, but also incorporate the harmonies, so we did a Christmas song, hoping that it would translate into something new, and perhaps, annually be out there and get some airplay, and that’s just what it’s done. It’s worked out well for us and people are familiar with the song. Last year, it was in the Top 5 on the Christmas charts, which was amazing. We think it adds a fresh take on what 98 Degrees is all about.

Q: What are you enjoying about the tour so far?

A: We’re having more fun than ever, which is really interesting. Back in the day, we had a lot of intense pressure, and a lot of competition, and we didn’t have other things going on with regards to our career, and our families, and all that stuff. So now, we’re having a blast with each other, and as long as we’re able to enjoy ourselves on the road, we’re going to continue to do it.

Q: Coming back to Ohio is a bit of a homecoming. All four members of the group have Ohio roots. What will that be like?

A: Most of my family migrated to California, but the rest of the guys are from Cincinnati and we always have a tremendous turnout there. Certainly, I consider Cincinnati as one of my hometowns as well, having been there so many times, and been with the guys, and done things for The School for Creative & Performing Arts (SCPA). We’ve always had an overwhelming amount of support from that area, so I’m honored to come back. It’s always a feel-good, high-energy night for us there and the support we receive there is unmatched by, I think, any other city in the country, so I’m super excited about being back in Cincinnati.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans in Cincinnati?

A: I just want to thank them for years of loyalty, allowing us to live the dream, and being there so many years later with so much enthusiasm. I can’t describe what it means to us to see them out in the audience, and their support. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

THE STARS ALIGN IN CINCINNATI: Television and radio host Ryan Seacrest brought along 98 Degrees band member and Cincinnati native Drew Lachey and singer Jason Derulo to walk the red carpet for the launch of his new TV station, WKID 33, inside Cincinnati Children's Medical Center.

"By creating the studio it brings this energy and hopefully enthusiam to the ground floor of the hospital where the kids can come and be a star," Seacrest explained.

Some of the patients got a taste of what it's like to be interviewed by Seacrest.

Some kids will get to host a show and interview celebrities like Drew Lachey. 

"My daughter was in the ER a couple of years ago for some stitches, so I'm here all the time," said Lachey.

Seacrest Studios will also broadcast game shows and other kid-friendly programming that will play on television sets inside patients' rooms.

When asked what is his favorite children's board game Seacrest said, "When I was a kid it was Candy Land. Just because I wanted to eat the pictures of the ice cream sandwich."

There’s not much the HVAC system can do to cool U.S. Bank Arena on a hot June night when the place is sold out.

And all a performer such as Donnie Wahlberg can do in such sweaty conditions is run around the stage with his shirt off.

Wahlberg’s group New Kids On The Block headlined a three-way boy-band package that also included Boyz II Men and Cincinnati’s own 98 Degrees. The two opening acts each delivered professional performances in the boy-band tradition, with much crooning, harmonizing, long-stemmed-rose-tossing and audience hand-holding.

But the New Kids’ two-hour headlining set was the boy-band master class. They are so cocky, so over the top, that all other boy bands must bow down. They don’t just hold your hand, stare into your eyes and sing a verse to you. Wahlberg will grab a woman in the front row and lock lips with her for a solid 10 seconds. Maybe it was 20 seconds. Maybe time stood still.

We will assume that the women in the place approved, as they were unleashing screaming 1989 teenage versions of themselves, contributing to the heat and humidity in the joint.

The quintet performed on a pentagon-shaped stage in the middle of the arena. Portions of the stage would spin and lift for heightened dramatic effect on ballads such as Joey McIntyre’s centerpiece “Please Don’t Go Girl.” He dropped to his knees, on an airborne riser, high above the crowd, and pleaded to his girl, whom he did not want to go: “It’s been 25 years! It’s been 25 years!”

Of course, that was in reference to how long the band has been in the public eye. And though the New Kids don’t crank out hits like they once did, they still strut around the stage as if it were the late ’80s.

They bookended the set with two of their biggest hits “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” and “Hangin’ Tough,” and in between came a few wardrobe changes, a medley of cover songs and several other quarter-century-old NKOTB hits, like “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind),” “Step by Step,” “Cover Girl” and “I’ll Be Loving You (Forever).”

The New Kids also welcomed 98 Degrees back to the stage as both groups – that’s a total of nine handsome men – sang the 98 Degrees hit “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche).”

The Cincinnati group’s 45-minute set was good, full of the hyper-romantic material and harmonizing that made 98 Degrees hit-makers in the late ’90s.

Setting the tone for Wahlberg’s future exploits, each member of the quartet removed his shirt down to the sleeveless undershirt and sang a verse of “My Everything” to a woman sitting on a stool. In case that particular woman wasn’t paired with her favorite 98 Degree, the men rotated positions throughout the songs, until each woman got a little time with each man.

The group brought back Boyz II Men, whom 98 Degrees called their musical heroes, to the stage. The Boyz II Men half-hour warm-up set was good, and the best musical moment of the night was the 98 Degrees-Boyz II Men pairing on an a cappella rendition of the old doo-wop song “In the Still of the Night.”

Reds Kid Glove Games begin with luncheon featuring Nick Lachey

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A luncheon was held Wednesday afternoon to mark the beginning of the Reds Kid Glove Games program.

Honorary chairperson Nick Lachey hosted the luncheon that was held at the Diamond Club at Great American Ballpark. The Kids Glove program provides area youth leagues with equipment by selling Reds tickets.

Nick Lachey, who used to play in little league, said at the luncheon, "I think it's just so important that we're able to keep our youth invested in sports and team sports and especially baseball. It's such a great baseball town and I think it's really important that we as a community continue to remember that and continue to promote that with our young people."

More than $8 million has been raised in the 62 year history of the kid glove program.

I’m told you’ll see this on the People magazine website tomorrow…. but you can read it here and see it on YouTube. Nick Lachey and fiancee Vanessa Minnillo Tuesday visited the Cancer & Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Tuesday. They brought gifts for each patient they met. On the YouTube video, they do a special salute with patient Tyler St. Clair for his girlfriend Libby in the Delta Gamma sorority at the University of Kentucky.

The visit was arranged by the Dragonfly Foundation,a [501(c)(3) Pending] organization determined to bring moments of comfort and joy to kids who are being treated for cancer and other blood diseases. The foundation currently is working in partnership with the Cancer & Blood Diseases Institute of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to provide distractions that will help ease the pain and fear these children and their families experience on a daily basis.
