Cincinnati Reds + Nick Lachey= One great day for Big Brothers Big Sisters

TV and recording star--and Cincinnati native--Nick Lachey spends time with Big Sister Melia Cadir and her Little Sister Kyleigh. The two are from Lawrenceburg and are paired Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati mentoring program. This trio met at Big Brothers Big Sisters Day at the Reds. Lachey led the crowd in singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," and talked with broadcaster Marty Brennaman on 700WLW about the experience of being a volunteer Big Brother.
It was a great day to be a kid, no matter your age, when the Reds took on the Astros on Big Brothers Big Sisters Day.
The Cincinnati Reds teamed up with Tri-State Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies to raise funds for them—and also treated some of children and their mentors to a day at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds offered special seats and reduced prices, with part of the proceeds benefiting the mentoring agencies. Several of the “Little Brothers” and “Little Sisters” were invited onto the field with their “Big Brothers” and “Big Sisters,” and met Cincinnati Reds players as well as mascots.
TV and recording star Nick Lachey, a long-time Big Brother himself, served as honorary captain of the game and talked with Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman on 700 WLW about the experience and encouraged others to volunteer. Lachey then headed to the Big Brothers Big Sisters section of the ball park and led the crowd in singing “Take Me Out ToThe Ball Game.” Big Sister Melia Cadir and her Little Sister Kyleigh, both of Lawrenceburg, were excited to meet Lachey. Cadir says, “It was a big surprise to see him. It’s great that he’s hands on and devotes his time to Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was super nice and really approachable. It was an unforgettable experience and I feel blessed to have that opportunity.”
Kathy List, President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati—one of the agency’s involved in the event—was thrilled that the Reds offered this opportunity, saying, “A huge ‘thank you’ to the Cincinnati Reds from the hundreds of volunteers and children across Ohio, Indiana and Northern Kentucky who were able to participate in ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters Day” at the ball park. We are grateful for community partners who understand and support our mission.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies are on a mission to help children become successful in school and in life. Nick Lachey - Nick Lachey Proud To Be A Mentor
SOURCE Singer Nick Lachey is glad he teamed up with a motivational kids' program to become a mentor as he was able to help a young boy "come out of his shell". The star has spent seven years working closely with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organisation, which teams adult mentors with children, and he has watched proudly as his 'Little Brother' has matured. Lachey tells Parade magazine, "He's 15 now, and the evolution of seeing him go from a shy, timid little boy to a young man in high school who has completely come out of his shell has been pretty awesome to be a part of. If I've affected his life in even the smallest of ways, it's been more than worthwhile." The 37 year old also hopes he can use his experiences with the scheme when he eventually starts a family with fiancee Vanessa Minnillo. He adds, "I'm assuming fatherhood is going to be a hundred times more intense than being a Big Brother, but watching a life develop in front of you is a bit of a parallel. I'm certainly looking towards it. I'd like to be a dad sooner than later. I'm getting up there. I've gotta catch up with my brother. He's got two (kids) and I've got zero, so the pressure is on me!"

Nick Helps Big Brothers Big Sisters Splash Into Summer
Multi-platinum recording artist, actor, television personality, and “Big Brother” Nick Lachey is helping Great Wolf Resorts® (NASDAQ: WOLF), North America’s largest family of indoor waterpark resorts, make a huge splash for a big cause. Lachey is serving as honorary spokesperson for the company’s second annual “World’s Largest Waterslide-athon” being held on June 11 at its eleven Great Wolf Lodge® locations, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters.
A Big Brother himself since 2004 with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, Lachey is rallying communities nationwide to join in the fun at any of the family-friendly resorts, including Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, OH, a suburb of his Cincinnati hometown. From 11a.m. to 11p.m. on Saturday, June 11, for every guest who takes the plunge down the designated waterslide, Great Wolf Resorts will donate $1 to the mentoring organization (up to $50,000). The money raised from the waterslide-athon, plus other local fundraising activities, will combine for a $250,000 goal, doubling last year’s donation.
“Most people know I have a younger brother Drew, but they don’t know I’ve had a Little Brother mentee which has been a hugely rewarding experience,” said Lachey. “Big Brothers Big Sisters needs mentors, but they also need financial donations to keep the mentoring going strong. This is why I’m excited to be a part of Great Wolf Lodge’s Waterslide-athon, a fantastic event where families can have a great time while raising awareness for an important cause.”
Last year, the waterpark resorts raised more than $125,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, in addition to setting a Guinness World Record for “longest distance water sliding in 24 hours in multiple venues” – with more than 45,000 Great Wolf Lodge guests sliding a total of more than 3,500 miles.
“We absolutely fell in love with Waterslide-athon; it perfectly embodies our relationship with Big Brothers Big Sisters by turning the simplest thing that occurs in our waterparks thousands of times each day, into the one thing our charity partner needs most – financial support,” said Kim Schaefer, CEO of Great Wolf Resorts. “When we saw the enthusiasm from our guests and employees as they rallied behind last year’s event, we knew we had to do it again.”
Increased funding will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters, the nation’s largest donor-funded network of volunteer mentors, to carefully make more mentoring matches and provide ongoing support to the volunteers, mentees and their families to help sustain the long-term, successful relationships unique to its programs.
While the daytime event is for guests only, the general public is invited to join in the fun beginning at 9 p.m. for “Waterpark in the Dark.” This afterhours event will allow families to buy special wristbands, then enjoy the waterpark until midnight to help wrap up the waterslide-athon. All proceeds from Waterpark in the Dark will help Great Wolf Lodge reach that $250,000 donation goal to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Great Wolf Lodge also has a way for everyone to slide along from home. For anyone who would like to participate but can’t attend, they can enjoy the virtual waterslide-athon on the Great Wolf Lodge Facebook page. Visitors to the site can “slide,” then make a donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters. The virtual waterslide-athon will be live June 6 through June 11.
