Boy Band Revival: 98 Degrees to heat up Grand Falls Casino
America's most recent wave of boy band mania may be subsiding. But 98 Degrees is not letting up.
The pop group will bring their "98 Degrees at Christmas" tour to the Grand Falls Casino on Friday in support of their new album, "Let It Snow."
After a 10-year hiatus, the members of 98 Degrees reunited in 2012 amid a resurgence of boy band enthusiasm.
"The U.S. is a little fickle with music being cyclical. Boy bands come and go," said Jeff Timmons, founding member of 98 Degrees.
In the 1980s, the popularity of male vocalist groups such as New Kids on the Block set the stage for others to follow.
The timing was right for Timmons to drop out college and move to Los Angeles.
"It was borderline foolish. My parents at the time, if you ask them, didn’t know what to do," laughed Timmons as he recalled his impulsive decision to pursue music.
The Ohio native was studying psychology at Kent State when he and a few friends from high school gave an impromptu concert during a party.
Timmons was hoping to impress a girl in the room. But as their voices harmonized, something about the sound caught his attention.
With Boyz II Men topping the charts, Timmons decided to quit school the next day and drive to Los Angeles. Quickly, he teamed met up with Justin Jeffre and brothers Nick and Drew Lachey to form 98 Degrees.
"Sometimes in life you do things on a whim," said Timmons. "That’s the sign of the universe pointing you in the right direction."
After a few short years working minimum wage jobs, the group landed a deal with Motown Records.
In the early 2000s, 98 Degrees reigned alongside fellow boy bands NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.
But once again, America's taste shifted, and the country entered a boy band drought lasting nearly a decade.
In 2002, 98 Degrees officially took a break from recording and performing. "We kind of wanted to explore our own lives," said Timmons. "We had been together for six or seven years straight. It was a pretty crazy time."
During the height of their popularity, the members of 98 Degrees got seven days off over the course of two years.
On hiatus, the pop stars started families and pursued other careers.
Nick Lachey married singer Jessica Simpson and released two solo albums, "SoulO" and "What's Left of Me." Timmons also released a solo album, "Whisper That Way," and Jeffre ran for mayor of Cincinnati.
But with the rise of One Direction in 2011, boy bands were back once again. The members of 98 Degrees tested the waters at a festival in 2012 and reunited shortly after that.
"We missed each other," said Timmons. "We’re like brothers at the end of the day."
According to Timmons, the band feels blessed and fortunate that their fans have stuck by them for 20 years.
Fans coming to their show on Friday can expect all the bells and whistles.
Out of all the band's albums, their 1999 Christmas record stood the test of time, so the group was "very pleased" to do another one.
Their new track "Season of Love" is a change of pace from their usual style. The original song has an upbeat tempo, as opposed to the group's signature ballads.
After achieving success as a group and individually, the band members no longer feel the pressure they once did. According to Timmons, it was hard to enjoy performing when the competition was so fierce.
On their new tour, the boys get to let loose and have fun.
With the breakup of One Direction in 2016, the third wave of boy band mania seems to be petering out. But for 98 Degrees, things are heating back up.

Timmons buys time for 98 Degrees buzz in ‘Men of the Strip’ delay

Jeff Timmons has directed the cast of “Men of the Strip” to halt applying body oil for a few weeks. He wants more time to generate publicity across the country, and even internationally.
And we can expect 1990s heartthrobs 98 Degrees to play into this delay-and-conquer strategy.
Timmons’ male revue, five years in development, was to open last Thursday at Tropicana’s Havana Room nightclub. Instead, Timmons and co-producers “Money Mike” Folan and Daniel Kouretas of Kouretas Entertainment Group of Las Vegas moved the show back to July 14.
Timmons says “Men of the Strip” could have opened for previews already. But that is not the point.
“We have been sidetracked with other projects and we need a little more time to build a national buzz,” said Timmons, a founding member of 98 Degrees who just wrapped a tour with the reunited boy band in the fall. “We are looking at a national ad campaign, some national TV talk shows, to help hype what we’ve got going on in Las Vegas.”
While no official annoucement is yet made, expect this activity to be centered on 98 Degrees. The timeline fits a touring schedule an upcoming album announcement — though Timmons is yet to formally announce any specific plans with the band.
Nonetheless, Timmons says, “I have seen the success of Backstreet Boyshere in Vegas and New Kids touring (they are billed with Paula Abdul and Boyz II Men at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday), all of these things going on with boy bands getting back together.”
The show joins the new revue “Magic Mike Live,” backed by Channing Tatum at Hard Rock Hotel, along with proven sellers “Chippendales” at the Rio and “Thunder from Down Under” at Excalibur. Timmons has long claimed there is room for his dance show, as he taps into his own name recognition and plans a rotation of guest hosts.
As it is, Timmons is set to host the show for the first five months, saying, “I might even join the guys in a number.”
Timmons has also recorded a novelty duet with noted pro wrestler Jessie Godderz, the “Mr. Pec-Tacular” who has also co-starred “Big Brother” on CBS. Set for release sometime next month or early July, the song is “The Girl is With Me,” a takeoff of the Paul McCartney-Michael Jackson 1982 hit, “The Girl is Mine.”
The video was recorded in Las Vegas, and targeted to hit the market along with the upcoming season of “Big Brother” in late-June.
Otherwise, the show’s template is unchanged. Seven dancers have been cast to perform in the round of the former Club Nikki, RPM and finally Bagatelle Beach Club. The venue has sat devoid of public performances since Bagatelle uprooted from property in 2013.
“The club is gorgeous,” Timmons said, “and the guys are frothing at the mouth to start performing.” Stop The Froth, a message that would fit well on a billboard.

Vanessa Lachey on Her Newborn's Name, Nick's Sweet Tooth & Why You Should #BakeSomeGood
Vanessa and Nick Lachey are living the sweet life. Having met on the set of Nick’s music video for “What’s Left of Me” in 2006, they began dating until their intimate, surprise wedding on a tropical island in 2011. Vanessa, known for hosting shows TRL and Entertainment Tonight, and Nick, member of pop/R&B boy band 98 Degrees, even share the same birthday of November 9. The couple welcomed their third child, son Phoenix Robert Lachey, on Christmas Eve, and their middle child, daughter Brooklyn Elisabeth Lachey, turned 2 on January 5.
Her social media is flooded with photos of her three adorable kiddos (including 4-year-old Camden John Lachey), showing how much she enjoys motherhood.
In addition to being a loving mom, she isn’t shy about acknowledging her husband’s good looks, either. Vanessa mentions the phoenix tattooed across Nick’s shoulders — which played a part in deciding their newborn’s name — and wonders if I know of it, quickly adding, “I’m sure you do because you’ve seen 98 Degrees pictures with his shirt off.”
The busy mama recently teamed up with Nestlé Toll House for the #BakeSomeGood campaign, an effort to inspire people to brighten someone’s day and celebrate the good in the world. Over the holiday season, Nestlé selected six bakers in Chicago, ranging from amateurs to professional chefs. Each day, for 100 days, they baked and delivered treats as a pick-me-up or thank you to others in the community.
Together they made 20,878 baked goods and spent 853 hours in the kitchen to perform the random acts of kindness. On the 100th day of the campaign, the bakers worked for 25 hours straight, setting the Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours of baking.
An avid cook and baker, Vanessa created her own recipe to contribute, a decadent Chocolate Chunk Cookie with sea salt. She spoke with Parade about balancing family and romance, Nick’s sweet tooth and how to give back with baked goods.
Congrats on welcoming baby Phoenix! How did you choose his name?
It’s so silly how it came about. Nick had just come off of Kelly Ripa’s show and I was looking at her Instagram and thinking of her son Joaquin. I was like, Joaquin, that’s a beautiful name. Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix. At that moment that I said that, Nick had walked by. He has a phoenix rising from the ashes on the back of his shoulders and it’s beautiful, symbolically, what it stands for; we’ve had so many conversations about it. With our other two we went back and forth for months and months. With this one it was the only name that we thought of. It was the only one we talked about and we just felt it right from the beginning.
What do you enjoy most about being a mom?
My favorite part is when they do things unsolicited… when Brooklyn comes out and she’s like, “Aw, mommy, you look so cute!” Then she hugs me so tight that she’s clenching her teeth. Or when Camden leans over and grabs my hand and goes, “I love you, Mama.” I just melt because I didn’t tell him to say that and I didn’t make him say that and I didn’t give him a present that made him say that. He just felt it in his heart and wanted to say it. For me and Nick, it’s seeing these things happen with these little people who one day are going to be young adults, and we hope that we instill in them good qualities. When you see bits and pieces of those good qualities it makes you feel good.
How do you balance work, family time and one-on-one time as a couple?
We constantly have to communicate and now with three, we have to visually communicate; we started a family board where we put everything so that we not only talk about everything going on, but we see everything going on. Then it’s about, when you’re with the family, making that family time. I understand that, 24/7, people can’t put away their devices, but it is important to try at times. Whether it’s meal time or it’s morning milk and cartoon time, just put your phone away.
As far as the relationship, to be honest, you have to force the time and then once you’re there it’s not forced. We force it by saying OK, next Friday we have to get a sitter, we have to make time, we’re going to go away or go out to dinner. With three kids there’s no spontaneous, “Do you wanna go grab a drink?” That’s impossible. You kind of have to think ahead and we really try to do that as often as we can.
What made you want to get involved with the Nestlé Toll House #BakeSomeGood campaign?
As a mother, all I try to do a lot in the day is teach my kids about the good in life and how they can be good people but also, how to give back and be selfless. This was an amazing opportunity because I love baking and it was the perfect time; I was pregnant and they approached me. I was absolutely excited about it because, who doesn’t want to be a positive influence, not only to their kids but to their community? [By] the simple act of giving some chocolate chip cookies to your neighbor, you can have a ripple effect of something bigger and more beautiful. I think in this time we all need to focus on positivity. We need to focus on being selfless. This is an easy, very tangible way of doing that and hopefully it sparks other ideas for people to do different things in their community.
Did Nick make special baking requests?
He loves anything pumpkin. This campaign began in the fall/winter, so I did some pumpkin cookies and pumpkin muffins, but selfishly I made salted chocolate chip cookies because I was pregnant and wanted something salty and sweet. It was the perfect combo.
Your Chocolate Chunk Cookies are like an upgrade of classic chocolate chip. What other Nestlé flavors should we try?
They have refrigerated cookie doughs that are easy and literally take minutes to have your kids break off the pieces, put them in [the oven]. They’ve got a strawberry shortcake and blueberry lemon one right now. When I told [Nick] that they had a strawberry shortcake one he was absolutely bonkers. The guy does not discriminate and I love it. It makes it more fun for me to cook and to bake and to experiment because he eats everything.
The refrigerated dough must come in handy. Baking with three little ones in the kitchen sounds messy.
If I’m baking with them, I have to know it is what it is. I have to let go of my OCD and let them have the beautiful moment. If I want to do a good dinner for Nick or bake something specific, I wait until Camden and Brooklyn are asleep. But it’s fun for them to be a part of it because those are the memories you have growing up. That’s what you think of, those smells and those moments. That’s what I’m excited for them to have.

98 Degrees, O-Town, Dream reunite this summer for most hilariously named tour
Somewhere, the past versions of everyone who loved Nick Lachey in the ’90s are losing their minds, because 98 Degrees is hitting the road! That’s right folks, you heard it here first (maybe): Lachey’s band has joined nostalgic forces with O-Town, Dream, and Ryan Cabrera, and the whole gang is traveling the country on a summer-long tour.
The best part? They’re calling it the My2K tour.
One more time: They’re calling it the My2k tour.
This name is brilliant because it’s a mashup of the ownership fans felt for these bands, relics of the early aughts, and of the early aughts themselves. My 2k. My 2000. And, to boot, it’s a play on Y2K, that thing where everyone thought that, upon entering a new millennium, our computers would spontaneously combust due to some glitchy bug having to do with dates and times. It seemed highly likely, as the year 2000 approached, that we would all have to retreat to bunkers, subsist off the cans of Spam we had carefully stockpiled, and live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland until aliens rescued us or something.
But back to the tour. Because, if you can believe it, it gets even better: The tagline is “I know what you’re doing this summer,” which is a play on the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, which came out in 1997.
True to form, the bands appear to be sticking with the looks that made them famous in the first place. Here are the members of 98 Degrees rocking camouflage-print bottoms (which I think — nay, Ihope — are cargo pants) and vests without shirts on underneath on the opening night of MY2K in Park City, KS.

TRL' lives again as summer concert season sets its sights on millennial nostalgia

For pop music fans born in the late ’80s, there isn’t a summer more pivotal than 1999.
Boy band heartthrobs and pop princesses were all the rage. MTV’s “Total Request Live” was required after-school viewing. Nickelodeon even sponsored the first music festival catered to kids, headlined by boy band 98 Degrees.
Nearly two decades later, those same “kids” are still spending their money on music festivals -- but now with a nostalgic bent.
Nineties hip-hop label Bad Boy has launched a tour. Gwen Stefani and Eve will hit the road. Even boy band 98 Degrees is taking advantage of aughts fever this summer with a new outing.
“It seems like the nostalgia thing is becoming the in vogue way to tour these days,” said 98 Degrees’ Nick Lachey.
Lachey and 98 Degrees will top-line the My2K Tour, launching in July, which pairs them with former teen-dreams who once dominated “TRL,” including Ryan Cabrea, O-Town and Dream.
The 35-date tour stops in L.A. on Aug. 25 at the Microsoft Theater, where tickets range from $35 to $99.50.
“People really enjoy that era of music,” Lachey said of the ’90s and ’00s. “It was a feel-good time in music, and frankly, our country.”
Lachey said his group had been looking to go on the road since 2013’s Package tour — then their first in 12 years — which paired them with Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block.
Bundling newly christened heritage acts together made the most sense, Lachey said, considering past success with the concept.
“Every summer, you see it. Guys like Def Leppard and Styx and all of these bands go out together,” he said.
Yet tours based on fond memories rather than current hits are no longer just the providence of boomers or Generation X. A recent report from the Pew Research Center, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, pegged millennials, defined as those ages 18 to 34 in 2015, as America’s largest generation at 75.4 million.
Millennials are all grown up, and it’s never too early, apparently, to start looking back.
“You’re seeing it in hip-hop, with Puffy and the Bad Boy tour,” Lachey said. “New Kids has done it in a smart way [recently] with Nelly and TLC last year and Backstreet Boys before that. So we thought what kind of bill could we put together for the summer to appeal to collective fan bases?
“For fans, its a chance to come back together and take a walk down memory lane.”

Nick Lachey: Daughter Brooklyn Is a 'Daddy's Girl,' Camden Is a Protective Big Brother
Lachey's in love! Nick Lachey recently opened up to Us Weekly about daughter Brooklyn's and son Camden's latest milestones.
"Brooklyn's teeth are coming in, and she’s standing, almost walking. It’s almost like clockwork. When they turn 1, this personality starts to happen," Lachey, 42, tells Us exclusively of his daughter, 12 months. "She’s becoming more of a daddy’s girl, which I obviously love. She’s such a happy, happy kid and just a lot of fun."
Lachey and his wife, Vanessa Lachey — who married in July 2011 — welcomed their baby girl in January 2015 and celebrated her first birthday last month in Mexico. Big brother Camden, 3, arrived in September 2012.
"Camden and I basically beat the crap out of each other and wrestle. It's our guy thing," Lachey, who recently teamed with PepsiCo’s Game Day Grub Matchculinary competition, adds. "The way [Brooklyn] looks at me is different. It’s very, very cool."
Half the fun of fatherhood for Lachey is seeing how his children interact. "She’ll basically crawl after him and chase him. He likes to torment her and hide her toys and make her find them — typical big brother stuff. And I try to warn him that one day she’s gonna grow up and get even with him, but I don’t think he understands that concept yet," the former boy-bander jokes of Camden. "He’s a good brother. He’s very protective, and if there is a situation where he thinks she’s in trouble, he’ll go and make sure I'm aware of it."
Lachey is infatuated with his children, but that doesn't mean he's ready for baby No. 3. "I’m pretty happy with two," he says. "It feels like God has smiled upon me."
Lachey is just as grateful for his longtime love, who he calls an "incredible" mother. Their schedules are hectic, but they try to go on "day dates" when time allows.
"Every now and again we’ll get a sitter and go out and have a nice dinner. Maybe catch a movie or something," he tells Us of the Truth Be Told actress. "Whether it's during the day or at night, we’re firm believers that you have to create some time for each other, and you can’t lose sight of that dynamic in your relationship."
