Nick & Drew Lachey Talk 'Dancing With The Stars' & How Nick Overcame His Fear of the Show
"I'm proud of him for kind of going out there and putting himself out there, exposing himself," says Drew, who won the show's second season.
Drew Lachey may be the younger sibling (and 98 Degrees bandmate) to Nick Lachey, but he's been able to hold something over his brother's head for more than 11 years now: the coveted Dancing With the Stars mirror ball. Now with Nick and his wife, Vanessa, competing on the show's 25th season, there's a decent chance that two mirror balls could soon be in the Lachey family.
As the season 2 winner in February 2006, temporary co-host in season 5 and a competitor in the All-Stars season (season 15), Drew is familiar with DWTS' ins and outs. So, when it came time for his brother to compete, did he offer any advice? Of course not -- but it's not necessarily because he doesn't want Nick to win.
"I try not to give advice," Drew explains to Billboard. "I just don't think giving advice is helpful to anybody except for the person giving the advice. You know so I feel like everybody has their own journey and their own process that they need to go through to get where they're supposed to get."
Nick echoed the sentiment, especially because they have different pro-dancer partners. "The experience he had with Cheryl [Burke] is probably very different from the experience I'm having with Peta [Murgatroyd]," he says. But Drew did give Nick a little tidbit from the eyes of someone who made it to the end: "If you're lucky enough to be in it, it's a long road, so pace yourself."
"I was trying to be conscious of being supportive for him at the same time, preachy," Drew adds.
And supportive he's been: Drew attends every live show he can and, if the father of two can't make it out, he and his family watch at home. "They root for Uncle Nick and Aunt Vanessa," he laughs, "and they get really upset if they have to go to bed before one of them goes. We have to YouTube it the next day."
Drew has also tried to shy away from showing any favoritism between Nick and Vanessa, who are both still in the running as of Monday's (Oct. 23) week 6 show, by tweeting equally and offering support for both ("I'll let them deal with that inner dynamic," he jokes). Above all, Drew is just happy to see his brother having a great time with it.
"Dancing With the Stars is always something that scared him," he says of Nick. "Dancing is not his go-to. For him to put himself out there and go and do something that challenges him and you know frankly frightened him a little bit, I'm proud of him for kind of going out there and putting himself out there, exposing himself."
More over, Nick says it's all about effort -- something he knows he's not lacking. "As long as I walk away from this experience knowing I gave it everything I had, then I can be proud of it no matter what the result is."
If Nick does make it as far as his brother, there's a chance the show could run into the beginning of 98 Degrees' holiday tour, which kicks off Nov. 9 in Minneapolis. While that will create quite the busy fall for Nick, he admits that learning to foxtrot and tango amidst tour rehearsals probably isn't such a bad thing -- and, frankly, it could result in an iconic moment for 98 Degrees fans.
"Maybe Drew and I will have a little Dancing With the Stars dance-off or something," he says with a laugh. "I'm not sure that's a battle I can win, but you know."
"There might be a dance break or two in there," Drew adds. "You never know. You have to come check it out!"

Nick Lachey, the latest contestant to be eliminated from “Dancing With The Stars,” appeared on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America” to talk about his ballroom journey and exit. Watch the full “GMA” video below!
As Gossip Cop reported, Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd were the fifth pair to be sent home from Season 25 of “Dancing With The Stars” on Monday night. For his final performance on the show, the singer performed a samba to Dru Hill, Will Smith and Kool Mo Dee’s “Wild Wild West,” but his actual samba moves fell short. Unfortunately, he only received 26 out of 40 points, which wasn’t enough to keep him in the competition.
Following Monday’s broadcast, Lachey and his partner appeared on “Good Morning America” to talk about his elimination from the dancing show. “I’m not the best dancer, but it really wasn’t about that for me. It was about the experience and the journey that she and I got to go on together, and I couldn’t be more proud of the effort we put in every week,” Lachey gushed. He added, “Obviously you’d love to still be in it, we’re human, we’re competitors, but I have no regrets at all and I’m very very happy with what we did.”
The singer went on to talk about his wife Vanessa, who is currently still in the competition. “I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Lachey said. “She’s had a great time. We all have different paths on this show, and she and Maks are on a great trajectory, they’re right where they want to be. They get better each and every week, I’ll be rooting for her.” Murgatroyd similarly said, “I think they’re doing so well. People were behind them from the beginning, and Nick’s votes will definitely carry over to Vanessa and Maks.” Watch the full “GMA” video below!
How Nick Lachey Used DWTS to Teach His Young Son a Valuable Lesson: 'I'd Never Want Him to Think Dad Was a Quitter'
Nick Lachey is teaching his 5-year-old son, Camden, an important life lesson: don’t quit.
On Monday’s episode of Dancing with the Stars, the father of three discussed his ongoing dancing frustrations with pro partner Peta Murgatroyd, but explained to audiences why he chooses to stay committed even when the road gets difficult.
“I’m frustrated because I feel like we come in here and we work as hard as anybody else and the results just don’t happen the way I want them to happen,” Lachey, 43, explained to Murgatroyd, 31. “I feel like I just don’t know what I’m doing there.”
For week six, the pair was tasked with a Western-themed samba, which proved difficult for Lachey, who was admittedly lacking in confidence.
“This is the worst week for Nick to be down on himself because he’s got the samba,” explained Murgatroyd. “You’ve got to go into it with full confidence and I just feel like that’s not there right now.”
“I feel like a buffoon,” Lachey admitted to his pro partner during rehearsals. “To me, I don’t feel like a dancer. I feel like an idiot trying to be a dancer.”
Despite him feeling down, Lachey recognized that he has three young children — sons Camden John, 5, and 10-month-old Phoenix and daughter Brooklyn Elisabeth, 2 — who are looking up to him.
“I came into this competition to challenge myself. I tell my 5-year-old: ‘Once you commit to something, stick it out.’ I would never want him to look at dad and think dad was a quitter,” he shared. “It’s not an easy thing to be confident doing something you’re not in, so I have to come out and sell it as if I’m the best dancer in the world.”
After performing their Movie Night number, the pair received mixed reviews from the judges — and were awarded a 26/40 (two 7s from Carrie Ann Inaba and guest judge Shania Twain and two 6s from Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli).
“It hurts me to hear you say that it’s hard for you to come out here because you’re worried about how you look. I think you’re cutting yourself too short because when you did that breakdown tonight, it was fantastic — you nailed it,” said Inaba. “That’s what we’re here for. Everybody has a different growth trajectory. Yours is slow and steady.”
“When you’re doing that sort of solo stuff, you look terrific. You’ve just got to take that into doing the samba parts. … Just come out and give it some willy and dance!” added Goodman.
Although Lachey had a positive outlook going into jeopardy against Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke — “This show is about so much more than just the dancing and I’ve had a blast and will continue to have a blast as long as they’ll have me out here,” he said — his time on the reality dance competition came to an end.
“I think I’m most proud of the fact that we laid it all out there every week. I came in not a very good dancer, I’m going to leave not a very good dancer, but I’m proud of the effort we gave,” Lachey said after being eliminated. “That’s all I can ask. Honestly, it was a blast.”
“The toughest part of the show is having two parents be so busy with the show. If there is a silver lining it is that I get to be a dad again and take the kids to school. My son will be very happy that I’m around more, so I’m excited about that,” Lachey told PEOPLE after the show. “Look, in a perfect world I’d still be in it and we’d still be going, but that’s the nature of the beast. I went into this thing knowing I wasn’t the best dancer, knowing that it was going to be an uphill climb and I’m very, very proud that we gave it our all and I’m proud that we got to this point.”
Although Lachey will no longer be competing on the show, he’ll still be in the ballroom each week supporting his wife Vanessa Lachey, who is partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
“I’ll be here. Now I get to play dad again. I get to support my wife and cheer them on,” said Lachey, who added about Murgatroyd, “I can’t say enough wonderful things about this woman.”

Len Goodman likes that Lachey “went for it” and adds that his energy was good. He also remarks that his footwork was strong. They score an 18 out of 30.

Peta Murgatroyd really thought her time was up on this season of Dancing With the Stars.
Last week, Murgatroyd and her partner Nick Lachey did what many fans thought was their best routine so far when they danced to The Pointer Sisters' "Jump (For My Love)." While it may have been the 43-year-old singer's personal best, the pair still only scored a 21 out of 30, which put them in the bottom two for a second time.
Luckily for Lachey, it was Derek Fisher who ended up going home, but Murgatroyd admitted to ET's Cameron Mathison that she was almost certain that they would be bidding farewell to the ballroom
"It was more uncomfortable the second time around then it was the first time around," the DWTS pro confessed. "I didn't think it was possible."
Murgatroyd added that's she's over being in the bottom two. "I am done with this 'in jeopardy' thing -- whether it is legit or not, I am done with it."
Lachey also noticed that Murgatroyd thought they would be voted off on Monday night. "She had started saying her goodbyes to me right there on the stage," he quipped. "She said, 'It was a great run, nice knowing you.'"
Noting that he was only joking, Lachey continued, "No, but it is not a fun place to be -- for anyone who hasn't been in jeopardy before. It is not a fun place to be."
As for how he plans to stay out of jeopardy next week, Lachey said he's just going to continue doing his best. "This is about giving it everything you got and accepting whenever results happen," he said of competing on the ABC show. "That was my mentality from the beginning. I am going to give it everything I have every week."
Lachey's wife, Vanessa Lachey, also spoke with ET following her return to the dance floor with partner , Murgatroyd's husband, by her side.

Len Goodman warns Lachey to watch his arm, but says the dance was very entertaining. Bruno Tonioli says he loved how fun it was, adding that Lachey missed a few steps. Carrie Ann Inaba agrees and thinks it was a very enjoyable dance, even if it wasn’t perfect. They score a 22 out of 30.
The magic of Disney comes to life in the “Dancing with the Stars” ballroom tonight as the 10 remaining couples perform for a fan-favorite theme night. On Monday, the stars will transform into their favorite Disney characters for Disney Night and dance a Viennese waltz, Argentine tango, foxtrot, quickstep, waltz, rumba or jazz routine to a song from both classic and upcoming movies. One couple will be sent home tonight. Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd are currently at the bottom of the leaderboard with 22 out of 30 points. At the top of the leaderboard are Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold, who earned a 29 out of 30 during Monday’s Most Memorable Year Night.
