Nick and Vanessa Lachey probably didn’t expect a hosting gig on Netflix to be a place they’d air their real-life marriage issues. But that’s exactly what’s happened on The Ultimatum.
After the success Nick and Vanessa had helping cast members find romances on Love Is Blind, they joined Netflix again for hosting duties on a second reality TV series. This time, couples aren’t trying to find one another. Instead, they’re deciding whether the love they already have is enough to get engaged.
The Lacheys guide the cast through the ups, downs, and steamy dramas. They also give some private glimpses into their own relationship.

The show’s first season wrapped in mid-April, bringing plenty of the promised drama as well as some unhappy participants who feel their portrayal onscreen was manipulated. It’s also generated tons of buzz among viewers.
April went through Jake’s phone and sparked a confession from Nick and Vanessa Lachey
The show’s first season focuses heavily on the relationship between participants Jake Cunningham and April Melohn. After dating for two years, April pulled Jake onto the series with an ultimatum to propose. But things did not go as planned.
As a Netflix articleintroducing the couples put it, “Just one year after leaving the military, Jake wants to travel and become financially stable before he proposes to girlfriend April. But April, who wants a family as soon as possible.” The experiment did not push him to propose. Instead, Jake ended up getting cozy with fellow participant Rae Williams. April and Jake decided to go their separate ways at the series’ end.
ong the way, however, there was a scene where April went through Jake’s phone while he sleptt. Playing the part of good co-hosts, the Lacheys brought up this violation of privacy at the reunion. Vanessa started the convo by saying, “You went through Jake’s phone when he was sleeping. I’ve got mixed feelings about that. There was a time in my life when I did it.”
Nick and Vanessa bantered back and forth, joking about how they cracked one another’s passwords before Vanessa got real about therapy: “Honestly, I remember we went to a therapist and she was like, ‘If ya’ll are going through each other’s phones then you shouldn’t be together.'” Ultimately, Vanessa agreed with the therapist. They broke the habit for the sake of their marriage.
"She's kind of owning that role. She's really, really truly invested in it, and she loves being there, we all love being there," Nick said of Vanessa spearheading the new spinoff of the beloved CBS franchise. "I mean, the whole family's there at this point, so yeah, excited for her, excited for the opportunity to showcase her on a stage like that. The 20th is the big premiere, so we'll see, fingers crossed, but yeah, very, very happy for her."
The couple not only brought their children with them to Hawaii, they're bringing their four-legged family members over too.
"Believe it or not, I'm flying with our dogs Monday finally. Just want to get our dogs to go to Hawaii, so we're going with the dogs on Monday," Nick shared
While it's taken some time for the Lachey family to adjust to island life, Nick tells ET he can't complain about living in paradise.
"Hawaii is Hawaii, you can't complain about it. It's a total life adjustment, so I think for the whole family, it took some time to get into that new school, new living situation, but yeah, we're loving it," the Alter Ego host said of their new living arrangements. "It's a great place to be and most importantly, she's at home on her show doing what she loves to do."
He continued, "We're all loving it and it's good for the entire family. Hopefully we'll be there for the next 15 years."
In addition to his Masked Singer spinoff, Alter Ego, Nick has been busy with his band, 98 Degrees, who most recently performed at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. There, ET spoke with Nick and his bandmates, Justin Jeffre, Drew Lachey and Jeff Timmons, about their new music and being back together onstage.
Nick Lachey is best known as the lead singer of the boyband 98 Degrees — one of the late 90s/early 2000s singing groups that became heartthrobs around America, while Vanessa Lachey (née Minnillo) is an actress, model, and TV host on shows like Entertainment Tonight. With similar, fast-paced lifestyles, the two were destined to meet eventually. Similar to your favorite romantic comedy movie, the path to their decade-long marriage wasn't quite a straight and narrow path.
As a matter of fact, Nick was previously married before dating Vanessa. In December 1998, he was introduced to fellow singer Jessica Simpson at a Christmas event. They dated on and off until they tied the knot in October 2002. MTV even documented the newlyweds' lives in a short-lived reality television show called Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The show concluded in March 2005, just months before they filed for divorce. The news shocked everyone as their relationship seemed like a pop culture match made in heaven.
Fast-forward to November 2010 and Nick proposes to Vanessa after years of knowing each other. Here are the cinematic details to how the two met, as well as how the dynamic duo finds balance between marriage, family, and stardom.
How did Nick and Vanessa meet?
As the host of MTV's Total Request Live, Vanessa met tons of early 2000s pop culture icons, and one of those was Nick. Because his band was a pretty big deal, Nick would be a frequent guest on the show. As a matter of fact, Vanessa would often report on his and Jessica's relationship as that was THE hot topic of the time (can you say awkward?).
"I wouldn’t necessarily say TRL brought us together, but that was definitely part of our time together — me being a musician and her being on-air talent. I saw her multiple times throughout the years when she was on TRL," said Nick in an interview for Billboard.
What Vanessa dubbed as the beginning of their relationship was the shoot for Nick's music video titled "What's Left of Me." The hit song was about his past relationship with Jessica, but on set, a new relationship was blooming.
In an interview with Billboard, Vanessa said,"But the video, which was on TRL, was the beginning of our relationship. That’s what made it no longer friends and it got romantic. To the point that if you go back and look at the video, when he came to premiere it, I was so nervous and so crushing him that I didn’t show up for work that day. I called in sick."
The New Year's kiss that sealed the deal
On New Year's Eve 2007, Nick and Vanessa took their relationship public on live television. Although they were spotted together previously, they left no more speculation when they went in for a smooch on MTV's New Year's Eve special. *cue the awws*
In 2009, the couple broke up for about a month or two, but they couldn't stay away from each other. Call it fate or destiny. After some time apart, they decided that being "just friends" couldn't work because they were head-over-heels for each other.
When did Nick and Vanessa tie the knot?
In a 2010 interview with CNN, Nick had these kind words to say about his wife: "I think I knew pretty early on that we would be a good match, that I loved her. So I would say, within the first six months we dated, I probably knew that was the one I wanted to be with."

Fast forward to now and Vanessa shared with fans on Instagram an emotional video of her learning that she got a new leading role on NCIS: Hawai'i. Nick Lachey and wife Vanessa looked happy in love as they enjoyed a leisurely day at the beach during their family vacation to Cabo San Lucas on Monday afternoon.
The lovebirds, who will celebrate a decade of marriage in July, were joined with their three adorable children: eight-year-old Camden, Brooklyn, six, and Phoenix, four.
Lachey, 47, played baseball with their two sons as Vanessa, 40, showed off her midriff in a bright yellow bandeau bikini top and high-waisted bottoms.
Just weeks before much of the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all anyone could talk about was the Netflix dating series Love Is Blind.
The ambitious and experimental reality show placed 30 men and women in pods, allowing them the opportunity to "speed" date without getting physical appearances involved.
Multiple couples ended up getting engaged just moments after meeting face-to-face, and six of them were sent on a dream vacation to Mexico.
Those who lasted the whole trip moved in together in Atlanta. Two pairs are still happily married more than two years after filming concluded.
The unique series sparked countless memes, and it launched many of the contestants into stardom. Throughout the process, they were guided by co-hosts/husband and wife duo Vanessa and (obviously) Nick Lachey.
Shortly after it debuted, Love Is Blind was renewed for two more seasons. In the year since Season 2 was greenlit, there haven't been many updates.
Vanessa Lachey spoke exclusively with Distractify about the continuation of the series and about her hosting gig for the Total Wireless Awards.
Back in March of 2020, after Love Is Blind became a stalwart staple on Netflix's Top 10 trending list, the series was renewed for two more seasons. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that the second season would focus on singletons in the Chicago area
Vanessa exclusively confirmed to Distractify that she and Nick were preparing to leave sometime in April to begin filming the next two seasons back-to-back. After Chicago, the third season of the show will center in Dallas.
While some fans assumed that the pods would make it easy to filmLove Is Blindin the throes of the pandemic, Vanessa shared that it was a lot more complicated than that.
"People think that it's something that's easy to film during lockdown, but the pods are only part of the process," she explained. "The rest of it is those interactions after the pods — when they see the person at the romantic getaway, and then when they get back home. There's a lot of physical interaction, which is why it's been pushed so long."
It's unclear whether the romantic getaways will be like they were in Season 1 or if they'll be staycations due to the pandemic.
"We wanted to find a way to be safe, and they've finally found that way," the Call Me Kat actress shared, before adding that she's excited to film in order to give new content to viewers.
Love Is Blind took its audience by surprise when the reality dating show premiered on Netflix, Feb. 13, 2020. Hosts Vanessa Lachey and husband Nick Lachey may have only been seen a few times throughout the season, but they played a much larger role in the series than what met the eye. However, as they gear up for another two seasons, they're perfect for the position not only because they are great hosts but also because their own personal love story ties into the style of Love Is Blind.
During an exclusive sit-down with PopCulture.com for our @Home series, Lachey detailed the beginning of the couple's love story, making them a perfect fit for that kind of show. "It was kind of how we courted. That's why we were excited about it," Lachey said when asked how she feels she and Nick would have done had they been introduced on Love Is Blind. She explained that they obviously knew each other through the industry, but they were forced to create a relationship through a phone for the first year of their dating due to busy schedules. But naturally, FaceTime wasn't a luxury they had back then.
"We talked for probably our first full year of dating, just on the phone," she continued. "It was before FaceTime. Like, this was a full-on lay in bed, talk on the phone, texting." Lachey said they would travel to see each other, and any time one had the opportunity through work to go visit New York or Los Angeles, they would jump at the opportunity. However, even though they didn't see each other much through their first year, she says it was the "best thing that we could have done for our relationship was developed that emotional foundation by putting it all on the table on the phone, like this is who I am, these are my dreams."
Love Is Blind became widely popular because of the style in which people date. Unlike The Bachelor franchise, each contestant could not see what their special person looked like before being proposed. Instead, each contestant was placed in a pod where they had an opportunity to start chatting with the other person who was in their own pod, but no one could see who they were talking to. Those on the show couldn't see the other person until the day of their engagement. It sounds absolutely wild, but there has been a huge success in those pairings just on the first season alone.
It obviously worked for Lachey and her former boyband member husband because the two got married in 2011 and now share three beautiful children: Phoenix, Brooklyn, and Camden. Lachey mentioned that her work schedule is becoming busier industry-wise now that 2020 has passed, but something that's keeping her busy is her partnership with Total Wireless. "I'm excited for this partnership with total wireless because we are recognizing those who do amazing things."

“We’ve always done it, so they’ve always known it,” the former Total Request Live host, 40, exclusively told Us Weekly on Wednesday, March 10, while promoting the Total Wireless Awards. “They don’t [get grossed out], thankfully. I’ve tried to make it a point to show affection.
The Philippines native noted that she and the 98 Degrees member, 47, “don’t make it inappropriate,” explaining, “We hug and kiss. We’ll do a sandwich where it’s Mommy and Daddy hugging you in the middle and kissing you in the middle. That physical connection is very important and that show of affection. … We need to remind ourselves that physical touch is good and OK.
Camden, 8, Brooklyn, 6, and Phoenix, 4, “still kiss” their parents, and Vanessa joked with Us that she is “milking” that as long as she can — especially since Phoenix has stopped calling her “mommy.”
The former beauty queen explained, “It’s Mom and Dad. There’s no mommy.”
Vanessa finds herself “missing” the newborn stage now that her kids are growing up. “I just miss it all,” she said. “I miss being pregnant. I miss them looking up at you when you’re breast-feeding. I miss waking up and just having that time with just them and nobody else in the world.”
While she and Nick are “very content” with their family size, they aren’t opposed to welcoming baby No. 4 in the future.
“I still stick by anything is possible,” the actress told Us. “If that is in God’s plan that I have four, then we might be moving. I don’t know if we can stay in Los Angeles, but it’s still there. I still love my husband, so it’s still possible.”
The Love Is Blind hosts, who tied the knot in July 2011 in the British Virgin Islands, also shared that intimacy is one of the great parts of their relationship.
Vanessa calls shower sex “the secret to any marriage,” explaining, “anytime that you can find spontaneous intimacy with your partner, I think is a go. It will never backfire on you.”
The 1998 Miss Teen USA made similar statements in March 2020, tellingNikki Bellaand Brie Bella, “I’m in the shower and I’m like, ‘I have a full day. You have a full day. It’s either now or never.’ The kids are at school. It happens and then later that night, if you get like the cherry on top, great. But if not, we already did shower sex.”
Nick has “redefined his role [as a father], stepped up and stepped in” amid the coronavirus pandemic, she told Us on Wednesday. The singer will watch their little ones while Vanessa hosts The Total Wireless Awards, honoring everyday individuals who have done amazing things to foster virtual connection this year. Voting begins on Tuesday, March 16.
“I feel like even though things are looking up, we are still kind of in this rut,” the Dancing With the Stars alum said. “I need motivation from friends and family and my husband, and a great way to stay connected is virtually. I want to encourage that, and that’s what this is doing. It’s recognizing that and encouraging that and hopefully inspiring some people to do some stuff on their own in their own communities.”

The Super Bowl started as a football game half a century ago, but it has morphed into what is annually the biggest cultural event of the year. At the beginning, only the sporting press had interest in the Big Game, but as the years went on it became a full-on media circus. Basically, every outlet in the world wants in on the massive amount of public interest the Super Bowl generates, and that includes Music Television. Or at least it did for a few years back in the early 21st century.
This year MTV appears to be showing a Ridiculousness marathon that will run from 3pm on Friday to 6am on Monday. That is maybe the grimmest thing I've ever typed, so let's never think about that again. Instead, let's look back at the era where MTV tried to mix sports and pop culture for the Super Bowl. It only lasted a few years, but man, what a time capsule.
With CBS having broadcast rights for Super Bowl XXXV, they put MTV in charge of a halftime show that featured Aerosmith, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly. That appears to be the inflection point for MTV's Super Bowl era where they brought the whole gang to Tampa to get the full NFL experience. We also may be able to pinpoint the moment where MTV moved on from the football content game. After the success of the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show, Viacom again put MTV in charge of the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. That one featured a solo Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. That was the last time that MTV was allowed to produce a halftime show and also appears to have ended their on-site entertainment experiments. So let's go back to the beginning.
The week of Super Bowl XXXV (Ravens - Giants, 1/28/01) MTV played the first ever Rock N' Jock football game. Here is the glorious footage.
If you don't feel like watching the full grainy, two decade-old, half-hour clip, then I have taken some notes.
The game features a three-person booth with Gus Johnson, Jerry Glanville and Ananda Lewis, who hosted. At one point Glanville claims to have seen Shannon Elizabeth all the time in Houston, rooting for the Oilers. Glanville then called Gina Lee Nolin the best-looking center he's ever seen.
Dan Marino was the all-time quarterback, a role he would reprise for multiple MTV football games. Mystikal was in charge of the celebration wheel, which may have been a precursor to the NBA Slam Dunk competition dunk wheel in 2002. Innovation!
The AFC team was "coached" by Tony Gonzalez. The team consisted of Ja Rule, Jerry O'Connell, Nick Lachey, Colleen Haskell, Molly Sims, Shannon Elizabeth and Justin Jeffre, with a lightning bolt on his forehead. The NFC team was "coached" by Warren Sapp and featured Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons, Jaron and Evan, Gina Lee Nolin and Eve, who didn't appear until the fourth quarter.
Active NFL players were scattered around the field with Levon Kirkland and Marshall Faulk in a chairs going back and forth behind the end zone. Kirkland actually caught the TD, while Marino failed to find Faulk while he was properly seated. Then there was Cris Carter and Jason Taylor in tall lifeguard chairs. Carter caught two touchdown passes, which seems incredibly unfair. Donovan McNabb was an armchair quarterback, which consisted of McNabb sitting in an armchair on the back of a golf cart. It was a lot of work for a bit that resulted in McNabb throwing two incompletions while sitting down.
Jim Nantz and Mike Ditka did the highlights at halftime, but the video does not include Jim Nantz, the voice of the Masters, doing Rock N' Jock football highlights. Nantz would be joined by Boomer Esaiason on a future Rock N' Jock halftime show.
Rob Schneider, who was promotingThe Animal, was the sideline reporter. That's why Colleen Haskell was involved. People forget how big a deal The Animal was.
The biggest revelation in this is how athletic Nelly was. He returned the opening throw off for a touchdown and then made a one-handed interception of a deep pass by Dan Marino. When asked about the interception, Nelly credited his team with putting him in the right place at the right time. Look the part, be the part, I guess.
Much of what happened in 2002 has been lost to history, but we do have a little footage from 2003, ahead of the Bucs - Raiders Super Bowl, MTV brought in the hosts of the Man Show to join Carson Daly. Adam Carolla filmed a bit with Blink-182 that has aged about as well as you would expect. You should also know that Wee Man dressed like a football and Jimmy Kimmel kicked him into a vat of nachos.
It was a different time!
Moving along quickly before anyone gets canceled, there is also video from the final Rock N' Jock football game which took place in 2004 outside NRG Stadium in Houston. VJ Damien, Tony Siragusa and La La were on the call for that game which featured The Rock and Warren Sapp as coaches. Dan Marino is still involved, but Warren Moon plays quarterback for one team. Deion Sanders and Shannon Sharpe were also involved
This is the kind of nonsense American needs. Hopefully MTV will be brave enough to return to the Super Bowl next year. Football coverage just isn't the same without them.
