Johnson and Nick Lachey raise more than $400,000 for charity

CONCORD, N.C.—
Multi-platinum recording artist Nick Lachey and two-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson teed off in their first annual Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic at the SunRidge Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, Ariz., on Feb. 2.
Proceeds from the event, totaling more than $400,000, will benefit multiple charities, including the Nick Lachey Foundation and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, which support various organizations that help those in need.
Joining Lachey and Johnson on the green were some of the biggest stars of stage, screen and sport, including Jerry Rice, Jason Sehorn, Entourage’s Kevin Dillon, Joey Fatone, Geoff Stultz, Justin Bartha, Cincinnati Reds’ Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn, NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz, Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes, Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck, Falcons QB Chris Redman, Baltimore Ravens QB Kyle Boller, NASCAR’s Kurt Busch and Casey Mears, World Series of Poker Champion Greg “Fossilman” Raymer, and Washington National’s first-baseman Aaron Boone.
Lachey and Johnson kicked off Super Skins weekend at a special pre-party at Axis Radius nightclub on Thursday evening, with a special performance by P. Diddy.
The Annual Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic will continue on to Tampa in 2009 and Miami in 2010.
“We had a blast today,” Lachey said. “Best of all, we were able to raise a ton of money for some very deserving causes. It was a great start to what Jimmie and I hope will be a long standing tradition.”
“It was truly amazing to see the support we got,” said Johnson. “Everyone is so busy but they still took the time to come and help so many worthy causes. It was fun, but best of all, it was all for charity.”
Lachey and Johnson each pledged $125,000 to the Super Skins purse, which brings the amount pledged to charity to over $400,000. The Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic challenged celebrities to win individual holes (each with a $20,000 monetary value) in a team-skins format.
Each celebrity played for a charity of their choice. Some organizations that benefited from the inaugural Super Skins Weekend were The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, The Baseball Assistance Team, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Nick Lachey Foundation and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation.
Lachey and Johnson partnered with Prime Cuts Production for the Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic.
“We are proud to have contributed to the outstanding efforts on behalf of Nick and Jimmie to make this first Super Skins event a success. This event is a great jumping off point for Super Skins events to come,” said Charles Martin, president of Prime Cuts Production.

Backing First Annual Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic, For Charity

His ex-wife has been front and center lately on the sports pages, of all places, and now singer Nick Lachey is making news with a big-name sports figure, as well.

Lachey and NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson are combining their efforts for charity, putting on the first annual Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic next month.

They stopped by The Early Show and spoke to Dave Price about it Tuesday.

The event will to be held in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Feb. 2, before Super Bowl XLII.

Proceeds from the associated Super Skins Online Auction and Super Skins Party will benefit multiple charities, including The Nick Lachey Foundation and The Jimmie Johnson Foundation," both of which are dedicated to assisting children, families and communities in need throughout the United States.

Lachey, a multi-platinum recording artist and Johnson, the two-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champ, say they've pledged $125,000 each to the Super Skins tournament, alone.
Lachey told Price he and Johnson met through some mutual friends a few years ago and have gotten to know each other pretty well and we ljust thought, 'What a great opportunity -- so many people are at the Super Bowl that weekend -- what a great opportunity to ... raise some great money for a good cause."

Johnson said the goal is to have as many charities benefit as possible, and participating celebrities can designate charities of their choice.

Both said they expect the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers to make it to the Super Bowl and, while they'd root for Green Bay, they expet the Patriots to prevail.
