Over The Rhine performance helps stir Emery Theatre reawakening
The star of the show at the Emery Theatre Friday night was the Emery Theatre.
Nonprofit arts company the Requiem Project opened the doors to the shuttered Over-the-Rhine theater for a preview performance in what it hopes is a step toward returning the Emery to operation.
A sellout crowd of 742 filled the floor seats. Neither of the theater’s two balconies was open.
The show that unfolded on the Emery stage featured an eclectic mix of classical music, dance performances and folk-rock from Cincinnati veterans Over The Rhine. Over The Rhine’s Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist were joined by Nicholas Radina on percussion and Jason Goforth on lap steel for 13 songs spread over two sets.
Before the show, Detweiler talked about hosting the band’s annual holiday show at the Emery from 1994 to 1997.
“I’m a history lover, so I love all the stories that are connected to this space, and I have a lot of personal history here. It was the first theater we ever headlined, and that was a big deal to us,” he said.
The evening was emceed by Drew Lachey of 98 Degrees and “Dancing with the Stars” fame. He told the crowd that the Emery, which opened a century ago in 1911, is one of three acoustically perfect theaters, the other two being Carnegie Hall in New York and Symphony Hall in Boston.
“Me, personally, I think that’s something worth saving, don’t you?” he asked the crowd.
Lachey introduced the Requiem Project’s Tina Manchise and Tara Lindsey Gordon. “We’ve worked on this theater for the past three years, and we’ve never seen people in the seats, so it’s a very special evening for us,” said Gordon.
It seems as though the two have a common taste in high art, and that’s their vision for the Emery. Over The Rhine occasionally shared the stage with members of Exhale Dance Tribe, who performed choreographed routines based on OTR’s lyrics. Local musician Peter Adams played violin on top of a prerecorded music track, while Samantha Pille and David Donnelly, trainees with the Cincinnati Ballet, danced. Chamber ensemble Concert:nova performed a piece by minimalist composer Arvo Part as a video screen showed a collage of clouds transforming against a blue sky.
This wasn’t Joe Walsh playing “Funk #49” at the Taft Theatre, for better or worse.
There were additional performances and exhibitions offstage throughout the building. The backstage area was open before the show. There, in one room, was a performance piece in which four people with painted faces traded lines while moving affectedly across the floor. A fifth person sat in the corner and played violin.
“The world doesn’t make sense,” said one.
“So why should I make art that makes sense?” responded another.
Also backstage, local artist Joseph Winterhalter had his show, consisting of four canvas paintings, on display. In the Requiem Project’s mission statement, the visual arts would have a place at the Emery alongside music, film and dance, and Winterhalter sees that potential.
“Given the nature of the upstairs with the former rehearsal studios, there’s great potential for it. It could easily integrate with the other programming taking place,” he said. “But it’s going to take a lot of work by somebody whose primary vision is related to the visual arts rather than the performing arts.”

Justin Jeffre Talks About Jesse Jackson's Occupy Cincinnati Visit
The well known singer is a publisher of local online and print newspaper, the Cincinnati Beacon. The paper is a resource for views you might not get in mainstream newspapers.
Justin has also continued to show his support for the Occupy Cincinnati movement and was excited about Jesse Jackson's visit to the Occupy Cincinnati location in Piatt Park, Downtown.

Justin Jeffre has been spending tons of his time with the Occupy Cincinnati protesters downtown, and I thought this picture from CityBeat was a good one to share with our readers.
This next one from this item at the Enquirer is pretty good, too:
Hopefully, we can start incorporating more writing out of the local Occupy movement here at The Beacon. But for those who have noticed that our updates have been a bit light recently—well, Justin’s been active on the streets (and sadly, I’m spending the bulk of my free time working on another graduate degree, which has sincerely cut into my blogging and activism…)
The good news is that people are active and doing stuff here in Cincinnati, and the Beacon is proud to celebrate our very own Justin Jeffre as a part of this movement!

Nick Lachey still bros out with 98 Degrees
It's been over a decade since Nick Lachey was first known as a member of boy band 98 Degrees along with his brother Drew, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre, but Nick tells CNN that the friendship is still going strong.
"I was just with them this past weekend, we got together and hung out a bit here in L.A. and spent some time," newlywed Lachey says.
"That chapter for all of us was such an incredible chapter and such an important part of all of our lives that the memories we have and friendships are life-lasting," he went on. "It's always good to get together with them, whether we're singers or not, and hang a little bit."
But as Kelly Ripa signs on for five more years of "Live! With Regis and Kelly,"some are wondering if Lachey will be the next to co-host with her once Regis Philbin departs the show next Friday.
While the singer/actor played coy about whether he's been formally asked to host the morning show, he did say he's open to taking the job.
"I've had the opportunity to co-host with Kelly, I think five or six times over the years, and each and every time it's a blast," Lachey told CNN. "I adore her, as she knows, and I love being a part of that show, it's such a great group there. If the opportunity were to present itself that would be very intriguing for me. I really enjoy being a part of that up there."
In the meantime, Lachey is hosting NBC's "The Sing-Off," Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.

Why Are Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo Waiting to Have Kids?
We've got a celeb baby update for you!
Back in August, Nick Lachey told us that starting a family Vanessa Minnillo was probably just "around the corner."
But now the 37-year-old former boy-bander tells us…
"We both look forward to a family but there's no real time table for that stuff," he said while promoting his show hit a cappella competition show, The Sing-Off. "Just whenever it happens it does and that'll be a great day."
He added, "I think we'll take a beat and enjoy being newlyweds for a minute and enjoy that and get settled into our new house and then chapter two will be the family
So how many little ones does Lachey want? "Definitely more than one," he said. "I think I'm probably a three guy. Three to four."
As for The Sing-Off, Lachey insists he doesn't pay attention to any of the competition—i.e., The Voice, American Idol and The X Factor.
"I don't think I've ever watched American Idol to begin with so I'm kind of behind the eight ball on that," he admits. "I typically don't really watch the competing singing shows. I feel like what we do is different and unique and I've been excited to be a part of that."

Emery Theatre renovation--Drew
This Friday – 11-11-11 – Over-the-Rhine's Emery Theatre will stage a celebration of the 100-year-old venue. More than 10 Cincinnati arts companies will join with the Requiem Project, which is working on restoring the theater to its past glory.
Head here for tickets. Headliners include musical group Over-the-Rhine; musician and composer Peter Adams; choreographerHeather Britt; Exhale Dance Tribe; and Madcap Puppet Theatre. (Dancing With the Stars winner and Cincinnatian Drew Lachey will dance with Exhale Dance Tribe.)
Remember – when Emery opened in 1911, it was the first theater in the United States with all unobstructed views. Its acoustics are legendary.
This weekend is a preview – the Emery will close again so that work can continue. Led by Tara Lindsey Gordon and Tina Manchise, two New Yorkers who came to Cincinnati to reopen the Emery, the Requiem Project is still going full-force.
