Host says 98 Degrees could reunite on NBC show

Wish someone would give you just one more night (uno muchas noche!) with ‘90s boy band 98 Degrees? Nick Lachey says you may just get your wish – on The Sing-Off.

The former boy bander and current host of the NBC a cappella reality show revealed in a conference call that the group has considered reuniting on The Sing-Off’s stage.

“It’s something we’ve talked about in the past,” Lachey toldTV Guide Canada Thursday. “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you see that happen at some point.”

If 98 Degrees does appear on the show, the group would be following in the footsteps of Boyz II Men, which features Sing-Off judge Shawn Stockman, who performed on last year’s finale with the winning group, Committed.

Lachey says watching the various groups perform on the all-voices competition every week takes him back to being in the pop group, which also included his brother Drew, Jeff Timmins and Justin Jeffre.

“It’s a contagious show to be a part of,” he said. “There’s a camaraderie that comes with being in a group of any kind, of any band. That was true for 98 Degrees. There was a special … brotherly kind of bond that we all share. And yeah, I miss that.”

Nick and the Degrees dudes owe everything to the a cappella style. They used to sing sans band for anyone who would listen before heating up the charts with hits like “I Do (Cherish You)” and “The Hardest Thing” and stealing the hearts – and precious wall space – of millions of tweens everywhere.

“That’s how we got signed to Motown Records. We walked into the producer’s office and did an a cappella medley for him,” Lachey revealed.

“When you become a boy band and you start singing and wearing goofy outfits and stuff, a cappella takes a bit of a backseat. But it really was what inspired us to get together. The thing that created our opportunity.”

Lachey has been hosting The Sing-Off for three seasons, but he says this year’s crop of contestants, which started off totaling 16 groups and has since been cut to 12, has been “unbelievable.”

“I couldn’t be happier with the level of talent and the level of execution these groups have been bringing to the table this year,” he said. “The competition is really stiff. I can’t imagine how much pressure the groups are under.”

The Sing-Off airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, and Saturdays at 8 pm. ET on CTV.
