SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A new reality show is in production in Salt Lake City. It's called "High School Musical - Get in the Picture." During the run, finalists from all over the country will compete to star in a music video which will air during the credits of 'High School Musical 3.'

The identity of the finalists is a secret, but Executive Producer Jay Blumenfield said, “We all went to high school with these kids. There's the band geek, there's the pretty girl, there's the guy that we found who has an amazing voice but he just started singing. Before that he was a football player and all his football friends made fun of him for singing, but he loves it.”

The show's host, Nick Lachey, said as a performer and former reality show star, he can relate to these kids.

Lachey said, “Going into this project, I really wanted to be a little bit of a mentor to them. Obviously these kids are all here eyes wide open. It's a great opportunity for them and I just try to tell them to relax and have fun, be themselves. I think they're all talented.“

Blumenfield said, “Nick is one of these kids and he's so invested and he's more than just a host, he's like an older brother to these kids and it's really amazing to watch.”

Nick is the second Lachey to host a show on ABC. Little brother Drew hosted 'Dance War' after winning 'Dancing With the Stars.'

“Now I get to come after him. He went through school getting called my name all those years. Now for once I'm actually following him,” joked Lachey.

Producers say 'High School Musical - Get In The Picture' takes the essence of the High School Musical movies and puts it in the real world.

“We take that heart and that guts, that follow-your-dreams spirit and find some real people who have that,” said Blumenfield.

Seven episodes will be shot in Salt Lake City.

Lachey said, “It's a great town, everyone is incredibly friendly here. So yeah, we're enjoying our time here, it's been fun.”

The show premieres July 20 on ABC 4.
